Say whaaat? Liquid soap is actually a paste in its original form? That’s right friends, no more plastic refill pouches or heavy jugs or long trips to the zero waste store. Liquid soap is actually more than 50% water anyway, there is no need to pay for that!
We ship the paste wrapped in kraft paper. When you receive it, simply transfer into an airtight container for storage.
What’s So Special About Handmade Liquid Soap?
There are some very obvious differences between handmade liquid soap and the ones you buy in the shops. It may take some time to get used to the handmade version but we assure you it is much better for the health of you and your family! Here is an overview of differences that helps to inform you on the basic knowledge of all things liquid soap:
Commercial Liquid Soap | Our Handmade Liquid Soap | |
---|---|---|
Detergents | Synthetic surfactants are used (likes of sodium lauryl sulfate – SLS), can contain petrochemicals | None, oil + lye makes an all-natural surfactant as effective as the synthetic ones |
Glycerin | Extracted from commercial soaps and used to make lotion so companies can make double the profit on consumers | A natural by-product of handmade soaps, a humectant that keeps your skin moisturised and hydrated |
Preservatives | Most contain EDTA (not biodegradable) which is synthesised from formaldehyde and sodium cyanide, both poisonous | None |
Parfum (synthetic fragrances) | Many have pungent and artificial scents from added fragrance oils with unknown ingredients | None but feel free to add essential oils you like for some natural fragrances |
Lather & Cleanse | Good but artificial and can feel drying and strips away your natural oils | Using different ratio of oils, we can make more nourishing soaps with high olive oil or make more cleansing and bubbly soap with coconut oil. |
Consistency | Rather thick using thickeners like salt (sodium hydroxide) | Naturally more watery, olive oil based will be thicker than coconut oil based liquid soap. Can be changed according to dilution rates and can be thickened yourself. |
Rusticness | None, beautifully packaged and delivered, probably made by a robot | In abundance, can be cloudy, may separate (like all-natural peanut butter) but still works like a charm! |
How To Use Me
There are many ways to use liquid soap paste, you can dilute it with recommended methods below or just store some in a tin for on-the-go use and take a little bit before your wash. Definitely recycle a liquid soap bottle you already have at home or just use a glass jar if you can!
Feel free to play with the dilution percentages according to your needs, the rule of thumb is:
More concentrated = more cleansing, thicker soap consistency, yields less liquid soap
Less concentrated = more gentle, more watery consistency, lower cost, yields more liquid soap
Video Tutorial 🎬
Method 1 – Foaming Pump (less concentrated)
This is our preferred way to use handmade liquid soap as you only need a little bit of paste for a full bottle of soap.
- Check the volume of the bottle.
- Calculate amount of paste you need – volume of bottle x 15%.
- 15% makes a very water consistency, this is perfect for a foaming pump (yields 660g of liquid soap per 100g of soap paste)
- Put the amount of paste into bottle and fill with warm water. For faster diluting, break paste into smaller chunks.
- Wait a few hours for it to dilute.
- Use and enjoy!
Method 2 – Normal Pump/Cap (more concentrated)
Upcycle a used liquid soap bottle or washing up liquid bottle if you can.
- Check the volume of the bottle.
- Calculate amount of paste you need – volume of bottle x 30% to 50%.
- 30% makes a watery consistency (yields 330g of liquid soap per 100g of soap paste)
- 50% makes a syrupy consistency (yields 200g of liquid soap per 100g of soap paste)
- Put the amount of paste into bottle and fill with warm water. For faster diluting, break paste into smaller chunks.
- Wait a few hours for it to dilute.
- Use and enjoy!
Other Tweaks
- Essential oils – add your favourite essential oils for a scented soap
- Thickener – add salt or xanthum/guar gum to the soap if you use a normal pump and are wanting a thicker soap
- Filtered water – if you want a clear soap liquid, use filtered water instead of tap water
Ingredients Explained
✼ Oils – a gentle and mild formula
- 70% olive oil: makes mild and nourishing soap
- 30% coconut oil: makes cleansing and lathering soap with fluffy bubbles
✼ Potassium Hydroxide: also known as lye, it turns all the oils into a soap paste (instead of a hard bar) that can easily be dissolved
✼ Water: helps to dissolve lye to make a solution usable in soap making
Suggested Use
Hair, hands, face, hair, body, laundry, dishes (best used with warm to hot water for oily residues)…
How It’s Made
Curing Time
This is a cold-process liquid soap. From the day it was made, it has gone through at least 3+ weeks of resting to help produce a gentler and long-lasting hard bar of soap.
Current batch is made on: 01/03/2022 & 27/03/2022
P.S.
Vegan, cruelty-free and biodegradable as always, never any nasty stuff (SLS, Parabens, petrochemicals, synthetics, fragrance oils, palm oil).
Take care: If you have sensitivities, do a patch test before use.
Gifting: we can hand write a special message if purchased as a gift – just let us know the details in order notes.
